Instructions

*Constructing frame directly on garden bed is preferred. Either way, obtain precise measurements to ensure as tight a seal as possible.

Cut (1) 2x2x8 in half to make (2) 2x2x4 (if garden bed is not exactly 4ft wide, adjust accordingly)

Cut (1) 2x2x8 into a 4ft 10 ½ in. piece (Center Support) and a 4ft 9 ½ in. piece (Kickstand)

To construct the base frame, Place (2) 2x2x8s on long side of garden bed frame and (2) 2x2x4′s on the short sides.

Square the ends, line up with garden bed, and have someone hold (or clamp) 2×2′s.

Using 3/32 bit, drill (2) 2in. deep pilot holes though to opposing 2×2, ½ in apart, centered diagonally ½ in from edge

Drive (2) 3in screws into pilot holes securing corner joint

Repeat on 3 remaining corners

To add Center Support, Measure and mark midway point of each long side of frame with pencil

Place 4ft 10 ½ in. Center Support evenly inside of the frame, lining up with midway marks

Drill (2) 2in. deep pilot holes into Support, ½ in apart, centered diagonally ½ in from edge

Drive (2) 3in screws into pilot holes securing one end of Support into frame

Repeat on opposite length

To build hoops, Measure and cut (4) 10ft PVC pipes in half

Starting from same end of the frame, repeat on opposite 8ft beam to ensure evenness

To find angle for drilling sockets for hoops, Bend 5ft PVC pipes to fit inside frame near markings on either side.

Use jigsaw and metal bit to cut track into two pieces

Measure and mark outside of frame at 9in from the corners of each side. May be 9½ in. on long sides.

Line up and center each track and drive 1in screws through pilot holes into frame. Track should be slightly less than flush with the width of the frame.

New Moons Phew! 2013: We made it! So now that the world hasn’t ended and we’re in a new era, this whole urban agriculture idea is finally gonna be a household thing once again. Right? Well, we sure think so. But just in case that’s not quite everyone’s New Year’s resolution, WeFarm America is ready with our backup plan to change the game. Last year saw a number of major developments for us: new office in the Green Exchange, new staff members, fresh gardens, programs and events, and exciting plans for 2013. Of course it can be hard to appreciate this time of year here in the Northern Hemisphere. We recently learned from Wikipedia that “Traditionally, the original Roman calendar consisted of 10 months totaling 304 days, winter being considered a monthless period”. The Spring equinox in March marking the start of a new year until about 200 years ago. Well there’s still plenty to grow right now, and we’re hard at work! We’re currently in the midst of planning the launch of a completely new, age-old concept: Cooperation. This Spring, we’re rallying support for the development of the Chicago Growing Cooperation, a new model for our organization to better connect people and resources. We look to engage and localize efforts between practitioners, organizations, and individuals hungry to enhance and activate community assets. We’re excited to see the movement expand along with all of you looking to realize the power and impact of real food. Join us as we grow Community Roots, gardens, gardeners and of course eaters throughout the city! Attend an upcoming workshop or event to learn more and connect to all the others supporting this shift. Thanks for coming along for the ride and enjoy this month’s edition.

Winterberry
It may be January, but have you noticed the trees littered with juicy red berries? Often planted only for landscaping, the Winterberry (which comprises about 400 species) is a sweet, cold-weather berry that keeps local bird populations sated, but are also edible for humans! In springtime, the twigs can be steeped to make a medicinal tea, but enjoy the berries now. Wait to pick them until they are fully ripe, soft, and wrinkly. Or, wait until they dry in the sun like raisins, directly on the branches. Because the winterberry is usually planted in Chicago for decoration, try to ask before harvesting. Hold the branch taut with one hand while gently pulling the berry stems. You can consume them raw, make a compote, wine, or use as a garnish. At this time one tree could give you 3 pounds of fruit, but remember to harvest responsibly and leave some for birds who are over-wintering. The edible winterberry grows on trees approximately 10 feet tall–do not confuse them with the red-berried shrubs that grow under 6 feet. Those berries are sour, unpleasant, and toxic.
